Congrats to Amy

Congrats to Amy

We’re thrilled to announce that Amy Ehlers has received her architecture license from the State of Arkansas. WOOHOO!  Amy has played a key role in some of our most recent work, such as MSU’s Pummill Hall and Glass Hall Renovation and Addition. She was recognized at last week’s Arkansas State Convention with other recent licensee’s commemorating her awesome achievement.  Way to go Amy!

The Future is Now

The Future is Now

The office took some time out this morning to enjoy the 30 year anniversary of the movie Back to the Future II. We celebrated with homemade hashbrown casserole and Amycakes Bakery cinnamon rolls. There’s no better way to start the day!

Reeds Spring Raises to Life

No Frankenstein, but still some interesting drone video of Reeds Spring Middle School under construction. The large retaining wall shown will define the main circulation space for the students and teachers. It will connect the underground “den” containing the schools gym and auditorium with the “school box” which houses all the classrooms. Pretty cool, huh?

Service on a New Level

Service on a New Level

Our office has been a buzz of activity the past couple weeks! Now we would like to take a step back and congratulate Brandon Dake, AIA on becoming chair of the AIA National Disaster Assistance Committee! Brandon has worked to help the Citizens Advisory Recovery Team (CART) envision the future of Joplin after the tornado hit in 2011, and he continues to advocate resilient facilities while supporting education efforts throughout Missouri and the nation. Congrats Brandon!

Honor Roll

Honor Roll

Every day we work to break through the misconception that “design” is not appropriate or achievable in southwest Missouri. The Springfield Business Journal recently acknowledged our dedication, choosing Dake Wells as a 2015 Small Business Award Finalist. We will be joining four other businesses on May 6th for the Chamber’s annual award event. Over a decade ago we opened the firm and decided to embark on this journey, consistently advocating for great design with tenacity. As our firm has grown, so too has our passion, and each award we’ve received is a reflection of that. We are both humbled and proud to be a finalist. Moving forward, we will continue to advocate the value of design. Dake Wells is on a roll!

Bug Boil and Alumni Accolades

Bug Boil and Alumni Accolades

Spring brings many things: new life, growth, and the annual Hammons School of Architecture Bug Boil! A welcome tradition, the spring event includes an award ceremony that celebrates the accomplishments of both students and alumni. We are excited to announce that two of our recent projects, Liberty United Methodist Church and Reeds Springs Middle School, were each recognized. Liberty United Methodist Church won a Merit Award, and Reeds Springs Middle School won the 2015 Honor Award. We’d like to congratulate the incredible members of our DWa team who make these projects a reality. And, of course, we enjoyed the bugs!

Mystery of the Missing Lightning

Where did the lightning bugs go? In celebration of the upcoming Art Walk and Earth Day this month, we’re posting a new video installment about fireflies and their mysterious disappearance. Closely linked to the documentary The City Dark, it turns out that the two main reasons fireflies are disappearing are development and light pollution. The documentary explores the myriad implications of a globe glittering with light and asks the question “do we need the stars?” Here at Dake Wells we advocate for designs that are part of a greater whole, and we strive to always consider the systems, ecologies, and people that are a part of each project. We hope the video acts as a reminder that we are all connected and the choices we make each day shape our community, often in unexpected ways. Check out the latest installment at Art Walk and let us know what you think!

Andrew to Speak at Design in the Middle Symposium

Andrew to Speak at Design in the Middle Symposium

On Friday, April 10, Andrew will be at Drury University to speak during the Design in the Middle Symposium. Part of this year’s “Locating Design” lecture series, the symposium is themed “Making Place in the American Small Town”. Andrew will present Liberty United Methodist Church as part of the afternoon panel discussion and presentations focusing on practices that critically engage sites—physical, theoretical, technological, and socio-political sites and landscapes—through the act of design. He will be joined by architects Marlon Blackwell from Marlon Blackwell Architects, Jeffrey Day from Min Day,  David Dowell from el dorado, and Steve McDowell from BNIM.

The symposium runs from 1:00 – 5:00pm, so please stop by and check out this great discussion on what it’s like to design in the middle! We’d love to see you there!
